A painter based in Saugerties, New York, and a resident of the Hudson Valley since 1981, Dan Shornstein captures the natural beauty of the region and beyond in his artwork.

Artist Statement

Over the past decade, I have immersed myself in both studio and plein air painting, inspired by the stunning landscapes of forests, streams, and mountains of our region and beyond. My primary medium is oil, but I occasionally use watercolor and pastels. My paintings have been displayed at local galleries, and I have built up a significant body of work in recent years.

“I want my paintings to serve as an invitation to take an emotional journey of wonder, contemplation and exploration of the natural world.”

I am fascinated by the alla prima approach to painting, which means "all in one go." My goal is to do just that with minimal touching up in the studio. Plein air painting encourages one to paint quickly and boldly without too much second-guessing or overthinking. I love this challenge since the light, shadows, and other conditions can change so quickly.
